In the preceding project a large number of results concerning the determinants of individual mobility decisions could be achieved. A policy approach to use the potential for the flexibilization of labour market should, however, include the consequences of a spatially more mobile society. Therefore, the current project seeks to examine the possibly negative consequences of spatial mobility drom both a regional and individual perspective. The aim is to jointly assess the implications of net inward or outward migration on affected regions as well as the consequences of a higher mobility level in a society. As its main goal, the project examines the economic and social consequences of migration processes that are selective with respect to the educational degree, the age or sex of the migrants. Furthermore, the project seeks to further our understanding on the heterogeneity of such consequences depending on the geographical proximity to other structurally weak or prospering regions in order to identify policy measures that may help in cushioning spatially heterogeneous consequences of migration.As another contribution, the project examines individual consequences of mobility. On the one hand, a mobility event changes the personal circumstances of the migrant and his family. On the other hand, selective migration processes alter simultaneously the social room for interaction. Both could have sustainable implications for individual behaviour and the welfare of the citizen. Hence, the project seeks to examine the individual consequences of mobility for socio- economic characteristics like employment status, income and housing situation as well as the implications for demographic factors such as marriage, divorce and fertility behaviour. Following the recent literature, the project also attempts to evaluate the well-ebing of those directly or indirectly affected by migration.
