College Openings and Local Economic Development

College Openings and Local Economic Development

Period: 01.07.2019 – 31.12.2020

The opening and expansion of higher education institutions are often considered by decision-makers as promising place-based policies to decrease disparities between regions. This project investigated how the opening of universities of applied science in Germany affects local economic development. First, it was analyzed whether and under which circumstances universities create new jobs and attract new businesses to the region. Second, the spillovers to the local incumbent population in terms of employment and wages were quantified.
