The efficient usage of modern ICT strategies requires an efficient broadband infrastructure. The European Commission (EU 2020-strategy) therefore demands, as does the German Federal Government (broadband strategy), that broadband internet is expanded resolutely. The study at hand by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) proves that broadband internet is a significant instigator for innovation activities in businesses in Germany. In the early stage of DSL expansion (in the years 2001 to 2003), businesses which used broadband internet were able to increase the probability of realizing product or process innovations by 25 percentage points on average. In particular in the service sector, broadband internet has given impulses for innovation.
