    ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment declines to 79.8 points

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany decreased in the current June 2021 survey, falling 4.6 points to a new reading of 79.8 points. By contrast, the assessment of the economic situation in Germany improved very significantly, with the corresponding indicator currently standing at minus 9.1 points, 31.0 points higher than in the previous month. The assessment of the economic situation in Germany is now back to the pre-pandemic level of August 2019. Due to the very high economic expectations, the outlook is now much more positive than in summer 2019.

This is the highest value so far since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time the indicator had reached a higher level was in February 2000. The assessment of the economic situation in Germany improved by 8.7 points compared to the previous month, and currently stands at minus 40.1 points. The assessment of the economic situation in Germany thus improved very significantly in May.

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany decreased in the current April 2021 survey, falling 5.9 points to a new reading of 70.7 points. This is the first time that the indicator has experienced a drop since November 2020. Expectations are still at a very high level. The assessment of the economic situation in Germany improved by 12.2 points compared to the previous month. The corresponding indicator currently stands at minus 48.8 points, reaching roughly the same level as in March 2020.

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany increased again in the current March 2021 survey, climbing 5.4 points to a new reading of 76.6 points compared to February. This means that since December 2020, the indicator has recorded a rise of more than 20 points.The assessment of the economic situation in Germany is also more positive than in the previous month, and currently stands at minus 61.0 points, 6.2 points higher than in February. The assessment of the situation has thus slightly improved by 5.5 points since December 2020.

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany increased again considerably in the current February 2021 survey, climbing 9.4 points to a new reading of 71.2 points compared to January. The assessment of the economic situation in Germany worsened slightly, and currently stands at minus 67.2 points, 0.8 points lower than in January. The assessment of the situation has thus remained practically unchanged at the same low level over the past six months. “The financial market experts are optimistic about the future. They are confident that the German economy will be back on the growth track within the next six months. Consumption and retail trade in particular are expected to recover significantly, accompanied by higher inflation expectations,” comments ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany increased in the current January 2021 survey, climbing 6.8 points to a new reading of 61.8 points. The assessment of the economic situation in Germany increased somewhat, and currently stands at minus 66.4 points, 0.1 points higher than in December 2020. “Despite the uncertainty about the further course of the lockdown, the economic outlook for the German economy has improved slightly. The results of the ZEW Financial Market Survey in January show that export expectations in particular have risen significantly,” comments ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach on the current expectations.

The assessment of the economic situation in Germany worsened again, and currently stands at minus 66.5 points, 2.2 points lower than in November. The assessment of the situation thus falls slightly below the September 2020 figure (minus 66.2 points).
