On the 9th of May 2009, the ZEW invited very special talents under the motto "experiencing research". Around 180 teenagers of a migratory background were given the possibility to take a very close look at the work of an economic research institute.

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for the fifth time. This year, Carlos D. Santos from Portugal received the research award for his paper about how sunk costs of investments in research and development affect the investment behaviour of a highly competitive industrial sector. Santos is economist and is currently finishing his PhD at the London School of Economics.

Despite a tough national and international competition among economic research institutes for research contracts, ZEW was able to increase its third-party funding again, which now amounts to EUR 6.4 million.

Research and Development both have an important role for increasing productivity, as well as for the innovative capability of an economy. For some time, there has been discussion on how an indirect support through tax incentives can complement the existing support measures. For this purpose, a view towards the neighbouring states is worthwhile, since during the last years, different measures to support research and development through specific tax incentives have gained importance in many countries.

A recent ZEW study among 2000 entrepreneurs shows that in 2007, research and innovation gained more and more importance. Compared with 2006, research expenditures may raise by 7 per cent. This would be the highest growth rate recorded since 2000. In 2007, 40 per cent of the companies increased their personnel recourses in the area of research and innovation. The driving forces behind this high dynamics are the increasing demand for innovative products and the growing international competition. However, Germany’s governmental high-tech strategy has been proven effective as well.

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for the fourth time. This year the Portuguese Joao Vareda received the research award. Mr. Vareda is an economist currently finishing his Ph.D in economics at the New University of Lisbon (Universidade Nova). He received the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for a paper on how the obligation of former monopolists in telecommunication markets to grant their competitors access to the network infrastructure affects the former monopolists’ investment behaviour.

Fifteen years after its foundation in 1991, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has become one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. The number of employees as well as third-party funding has reached a new peak and the admission to the Leibniz Gemeinschaft on 1 January 2005 confirms the excellent work at ZEW. "We have established ourselves amongst the leaders in the field of economic research in Germany and we intend to expand our strong position - also on an international level," state Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, ZEW president, and Thomas Kohl, ZEW Director of Business and Administration, explaining the institute’s orientation for the coming years.

The Internet presence of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) received the 2006 BIENE Award ("Barrierefreies Internet eröffnet neue Einsichten") for barrier-free Internet access, awarded by Aktion Mensch and Stiftung Digitale Chancen. The prize honours excellent barrier-free websites.
