    This year's Heinz König Young Scholar Award goes to Jitao Tang, Teaching Assistant at Rutgers University. Jitao Tang is already the ninth laureate of the award endowed by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. This time, the award is sponsored by the Günter J. and Christa Grochla Stiftung. It includes an endowment of 5,000 EUR and a three-month research visit to ZEW.

    Due to a extraordinary evaluation result, the Leibniz Association Senate has recommended to the German government to promote the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) Mannheim in the future as institute of national significance and macroeconomic policy interest. The senate stated that “ZEW is a extraordinary successful and promising institute of empiric economic research”. According to the senate, ZEW is well visible in Germany and abroad and is one of the leading economic research institutes in Europe. ZEW also sets scientific standards for economic policy advice in Germany.

    The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is financing a landmark project at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim to strengthen the economic top level research.     Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, President of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, and Chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, now holds the Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship, which is awarded annually by the Karlsruher Universitätsgesellschaft and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship is awarded to outstanding personalities in science, business, culture and politics for their contributions to research and society and pays tribute to the important physicist Heinrich Hertz who discovered electromagnetic waves.

    The Guests from Asia with Members of the ZEW Service Department Knowledge Transfer and Qualification Programmes

    Currently, 16 financial experts from China and Vietnam are guests at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The group consists of employees of exchequers and central banks. From the middle of September to the end of November 2009, the financial experts from Asia will expand their knowledge in the field of macroeconomics. Cooperating with external scientists and practitioners, the researchers of the ZEW impart further knowledge of financial and fiscal policy, but also of the functioning and stability of the international financial system, of the international trade and asset interdependence as well as development strategies in transition countries. In addition to economic competences, the financial experts will be trained in writing and presenting in English.

    Berlin Wall | ZEW | Photo exhibition

    The back of the Berlin Wall was colourful! You can see this for yourself at the Centre of Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim until the 22 December 2009. The institute is featuring a photo exhibition by Piet Joehnk who captured colourful graffiti, comical slogans and surrealistic scenes from the western side of the Berlin Wall with his camera in 1986. The exhibition is open to the public Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
