    ZEW | Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship

    Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, President of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, and Chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, now holds the Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship, which is awarded annually by the Karlsruher Universitätsgesellschaft and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship is awarded to outstanding personalities in science, business, culture and politics for their contributions to research and society and pays tribute to the important physicist Heinrich Hertz who discovered electromagnetic waves.

    The Guests from Asia with Members of the ZEW Service Department Knowledge Transfer and Qualification Programmes

    Currently, 16 financial experts from China and Vietnam are guests at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The group consists of employees of exchequers and central banks. From the middle of September to the end of November 2009, the financial experts from Asia will expand their knowledge in the field of macroeconomics. Cooperating with external scientists and practitioners, the researchers of the ZEW impart further knowledge of financial and fiscal policy, but also of the functioning and stability of the international financial system, of the international trade and asset interdependence as well as development strategies in transition countries. In addition to economic competences, the financial experts will be trained in writing and presenting in English.

    Berlin Wall | ZEW | Photo exhibition

    The back of the Berlin Wall was colourful! You can see this for yourself at the Centre of Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim until the 22 December 2009. The institute is featuring a photo exhibition by Piet Joehnk who captured colourful graffiti, comical slogans and surrealistic scenes from the western side of the Berlin Wall with his camera in 1986. The exhibition is open to the public Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

    Willi Stächele, Minister of Finance in Baden-Württemberg visited the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim on 4 June 2009. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, ZEW President, and Thomas Kohl, Director of Business and Administration, welcomed the Minister of Finance. Professor Franz says: "We are delighted to exclusively present our research institute to Mr Stächele."

    A core task of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) is to support young talents and to prepare them for the work in economics. On the 9th of May 2009, the ZEW invited very special talents under the motto "experiencing research". Around 180 teenagers of a migratory background were given the possibility to take a very close look at the work of an economic research institute.

    Today, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Angela Merkel, visited the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. In front of 570 invited guests she acknowledged the ZEW’s outstanding performances regarding research and politico-economic advice. She acknowledged ZEW’s extraordinary achievements and valued the work of ZEW president Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz in the the German Council of Economic Experts.

    Heinz König Young Scholar Award | ZEW | ZEW Summer Workshop | Award

    The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for the fifth time. This year, Carlos D. Santos from Portugal received the research award for his paper about how sunk costs of investments in research and development affect the investment behaviour of a highly competitive industrial sector. Santos is economist and is currently finishing his PhD at the London School of Economics.

For some time, there has been discussion on how an indirect support through tax incentives can complement the existing support measures. For this purpose, a view towards the neighbouring states is worthwhile, since during the last years, different measures to support research and development through specific tax incentives have gained importance in many countries.

    A recent ZEW study among 2000 entrepreneurs shows that in 2007, research and innovation gained more and more importance. Compared with 2006, research expenditures may raise by 7 per cent. This would be the highest growth rate recorded since 2000. In 2007, 40 per cent of the companies increased their personnel recourses in the area of research and innovation. The driving forces behind this high dynamics are the increasing demand for innovative products and the growing international competition. However, Germany’s governmental high-tech strategy has been proven effective as well.
