ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany, November 2017

The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany in November 2017 has once again improved on the result from the previous month. The indicator currently stands at 18.7 points, which corresponds to an increase of 1.1 points compared with the October result. The indicator, however, still remains below the long-term average of 23.7 points. “The prospects for the German economy remain encouragingly positive. Overall high levels of growth across Europe in the third quarter are supporting further growth in Germany and boosting expectations for the coming six months. This favourable economic climate should be used to create a stronger and more robust basis for future growth,” comments ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.

ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany, October 2017

The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany continued to improve in October 2017, however, not as strongly as in the previous month. The indicator currently stands at 17.6 points, which corresponds to an increase of 0.6 points compared with the September result. The indicator, however, still remains below the long-term average of 23.8 points. "The improved outlook for the coming six months is not least the result of the surprisingly positive growth figures seen in the previous months. In August, figures for both production and incoming orders were significantly better than expected. The framework conditions for German exports, which have already seen a significant rise, are further improved by positive growth figures for Europe. The fact that the inflation rate is rising again, and expected to climb further, equally points towards a positive economic development in Germany, making a change in the ECB’s monetary policy more likely," comments ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.

ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany, September 2017

The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany improved in September 2017. Climbing 7.0 points compared to the previous month, the indicator now stands at 17.0 points. The indicator, however, still remains below the long-term average of 23.8 points.“The solid growth figures in the second quarter of 2017 in combination with a steep rise in bank lending and increasing investment activities by both the government and private firms are likely reasons for the financial market experts’ significantly more positive outlook compared to that of last month. Their expectations are further corroborated by stable global economic development. The German federal elections do not seem to have been a source of uncertainty. The worries about the recent strengthening of the euro has, for now, also faded into the background,” comments ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach.
