It thus remains well below the long-term average of 21.4 points. In the current October survey, the assessment of the economic situation in Germany worsened again, by 5.4 points, with the corresponding indicator falling to a current reading of minus 25.3 points. This has been the lowest reading since April 2010.

The development of production and exports in Germany as well as Eurostat’s most recent flash estimate of GDP growth in the euro area in the first quarter of 2019 give rise to the hope that the German economy, too, has grown more strongly than expected in the first quarter.

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment rose by 6.7 points to a new value of 3.1 points

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany recorded an increase of 6.7 points in April 2019, with the corresponding indicator entering positive territory at 3.1 points. Although the indicator still remains below the long-term average of 22.2 points, economic expectations have recovered significantly from its low point in October 2018, having climbed almost 28 points since. Over the same period, however, the assessment of the economic situation in Germany has deteriorated considerably. The corresponding indicator saw yet another decrease in April and currently stands at 5.5 points, 5.6 points lower than in the previous month. The outlook for the German economy in the coming six months thus remains greatly subdued.

    Economic expectations rise significantly by 9.8 points; the new value is minus 3.6 points

    The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany recorded a strong increase of 9.8 points in March 2019, with the corresponding indicator climbing to a level of minus 3.6 points. Although the indicator is still below the long-term average of 22.2 points, the expectations for the medium-term economic development are less pessimistic than they were a month or two ago. The assessment of the current economic situation in Germany decreased again in March, falling by 3.9 points to a reading of 11.1 points compared to the previous month.
