    Researchers who wish to use data from German official statistics for their scientific projects are now able to access this data at ZEW.

    As of July 2018, researchers using German official statistics data for their research projects are able to access these data at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the State Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg has established a workplace for visiting researchers that can be used to analyse official data for the purpose of scientific research.

    The YES! teams that will advance to the national final in September 2018 have been decided.

    The high school teams from the Southwest that will advance to the national final of the YES! – Young Economic Summit have been decided. The winning teams from the Fritz Erler Schule Pforzheim, the Otto Schott Gymnasium Mainz and the Saarpfalz Gymnasium Homburg impressed at the regional final held at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, where they faced stiff competition from five other teams.

    Professor Irene Bertschek, head of the Research Department “Digital Economy” at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, was appointed as a professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies at the Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen on 1 December 2017. The joint appointment of Bertschek by the University of Giessen and ZEW will help to strengthen the already close connection between the two institutions.

    The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, has taken a clear stance for greater transparency and openness with its new Open Access strategy. Open Access involves making research publications freely available online. With its new strategy, ZEW joins the national and international efforts, specifically the Leibniz Association’s Open Access Guidelines, aimed at making scientific knowledge available to all without any technical, legal or financial barriers.

    Digitalisation and its political and social ramifications as well as potential reform measures to ensure increased cooperation in Europe were the main topics up for discussion during a recent fact-finding visit from the Deputy Minister President and Minister of the Interior, Digitalisation and Migration for Baden-Württemberg, Thomas Strobl, to the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The minister was greeted by ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach as well as the institute’s Director of Business and Administration, Thomas Kohl, who both gave him an overview of the research being conducted at ZEW as well as the institute’s achievements in the field of policy advice and in supporting the careers of talented young researchers.

    ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach has been appointed new member of the Federal Insurance Office's Scientific Advisory Board for the Further Development of the Risk Structure Compensation Scheme. He is appointed to the Board to help develop an evaluation report regarding the Risk Structure Compensation Scheme. His appointment by the Federal Ministry of Health runs from 1 February 2017 until 30 September 2017.

    Professor Achim Wambach, ZEW President and Chair of the VfS.

    In January 2017, Achim Wambach, President of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), took over as chair of the Verein für Socialpolitik (German Economic Association, VfS). Over the course of the next two years, Wambach will serve as chairman of the association, which represents around 4,000 economists from German-speaking countries. The VfS is one of the largest economic associations in Europe, with members from all over the world; most of them, however, are from Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
