    In the coming five years banks and insurance brokers are likely to see not only a fall in employee numbers, but also a change in the qualifications held by their employees. The majority of firms in the financial sector foresee a maximum decline of ten per cent in current employee numbers. Amongst other financial service providers, however, such as independent asset managers or financial consultants, the number of employees is set to rise. A large proportion of other financial service providers expect even to see increases in employee numbers of more than ten per cent.

    In the second quarter of 2001, the annual rate of growth in turnover of business-related service providers fell by 1.3 per cent, to a value of 3.0 per cent. The economic stabilisation seen in the first quarter of 2001, has not, therefore, continued into the second quarter of this year. Expectations for the third quarter of 2001, do not suggest that any improvements are likely to be seen in the near future.

This is the result of the monthly ZEW Financial Market Survey by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim. The survey includes about 280 financial experts from banks, insurances and industrial sectors, who give their expectations on the future development of acquisitions in Germany.

    On the one hand, 19 per cent of Eastern Germans who were aged 25 or older in 1990 experienced material loss as a result of the German reunification. In the period from 1991 to 1998, they achieved on average a smaller income then they could have expected in a still existing GDR. On the other hand, the total gains surpass the total loss by a factor of ten.
