    "Handwerk hat goldenen Boden" ("A trade in hand finds gold in every land"), for centuries, this saying was an accepted truism in Germany, one which promised craftsmen, and those who wished to learn such a trade, a secure future. Since the early 1990s, however, potential entrepreneurs have taken an increasingly skeptical view of a possible future in the craft sector. This is indicated by the decreasing number of start-ups being established in the sector, something which the biannual ZEW Start-up Report, published by the Centre for European Economics Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, has confirmed.

    The bottoming-out of the persistent downward trend of firm foundations in Germany, since 1999 the case, seems to have been reached. The semi-annual examination of firm foundations in Germany by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim reveals that the number of firm foundations for the year 2002 has stayed the same in comparison to 2001.

This is the case despite the fact that French women are more frequently mothers, and also have more children than German women. In France in 2000, 68 per cent of mothers were employed, whilst this was the case for only 57 per cent of mothers in Germany.
