The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim was given high accreditation in the current publication of the German Science Council’s assessment report. ZEW was praised for having turned into a centre of excellence for empirical and policy-oriented economic research in Germany since its foundation in 1990. According to the report, ZEW is a competent discussion and cooperation partner for universities and non-university research institutions, as well as a highly-sought provider of economic policy advice due to its research profile and so far successful work. The German Science Council therefore recommends ZEW to be included on the Blue List. The Mannheim-based economic research institute thus officially belongs to a special list of research institutes in Germany which are funded jointly by the Federal Government and the Länder as a result of their supraregional importance and in the interest of national science policy. The issued recommendation by the German Science Council is a precondition for ZEW to be included on the Blue List and forms the basis for the decision of the Bund-Länder Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion (BLK) on the future joint funding of ZEW by the Federal Government and the Länder.

In the course of the latest Supervisory Board meeting of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, the Chairman Prof. Dr. Manfred Timmermann (Deutsche Bank AG) welcomed Wolfgang Fröhlich as a new member. Fröhlich, currently head of section at the Ministry of State Baden-Wuerttemberg, was appointed as successor to head of section Dr. Helmut Birn, who had been member of the ZEW Supervisory Board since November 1996.

The renowned research institute headed by the member of the German government economics advisor Prof. Wolfgang Franz and the Director of Business and Administration Ernst O. Schulze invites the art-loving public to an interesting encounter between science and art.

With effect from June 3, 1998, Dr. Jürgen Strube, chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE, is appointed as one of the nine members of the ZEW Supervisory Board (Centre for European Economic Research, Mannheim). Senator Hermann Freudenberg, who has supported the successful establishment of ZEW by word and deed since 1991, retired from the Supervisory Board. Senator Freudenberg had already been member of the ZEW founding commission, where he contributed practical advice to the discussion about the tasks of ZEW concerning the demands that industry places on a new economic research institute. After the institute’s foundation, the entrepreneur, who had been chairman of the Freudenberg & Co. Board of Partners from 1988 to mid-1997, has held the position of deputy chairman of the ZEW Supervisory Board for almost seven years and as such has been an esteemed contact person in the Executive Board.

On Wednesday (10-06-1998), the German Foundation for International Development (DSE) and the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) said goodbye to a group of 16 Chinese human resources managers. The Chinese delegation received further training on human resource development in the form of a ten months programme designed and carried out by DSE and ZEW. The Chinese employers of these junior managers, chiefly state educational institutions, are not the only beneficiaries of this qualification. International companies which are increasingly investing in China likewise have a high demand for highly-qualified staff, especially in the field of human resource management.

On May 7, a new internet news service for the alternative energy industry will be launched. The new service is a joint project of energy experts from more than 30 European countries. The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) contributes to this expert network. The EuroREX (European Renewable Energy Exchange) website will provide subscribers with information about business opportunities on the rapidly growing renewable energy market. Even today, the renewable energy market generates annual sales of more than 4.3 billion ECU, and an exponential growth is to be expected as soon as the treaty states of the Kyoto Protocol begin to meet their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
