Workshop on Competition in Transport Markets

Since the deregulation of transport markets in many countries around the world, increased competitive interactions have led to substantial improvements in allocative, productive, transactional as well as dynamic efficiency. Notwithstanding the important successes of such market reforms, empirical studies suggest that the realized market performances still remain suboptimal in many transport modes and markets. Reasons for such a remaining improvement potential include persistent - but economically redundant - regulatory interventions, remaining or regained market power of incumbent market players as well as access problems to "essential facilities" such as transport infrastructures.

Against this background, the workshop brings together academics and practitioners to discuss current topics and trends of competition, regulation, and public governance in transport markets. Although the workshop is open for any kind of contribution within the field, the submission of proposals focusing on aspects of intermodal competition is particularly encouraged. Furthermore, some sessions will be specifically dedicated to the liberalization of the airline industry and will be organized in cooperation with the German Aviation Research Society (GARS).
