Understanding Extremism: The Origins and Spread of Nazi Ideology

ZEW Lectures on Economic Policy

How do ordinary citizens come to support an extremist, genocidal ideology? In this talk in the ZEW Lectures on Economic Policy series, the case of Nazi ideology is examined - its origins, spread, triumph, and aftereffects. This research draws on a rich set of data from the cross-section of German towns in the medieval and interwar period, bank-firm linkages, stock prices on the Berlin exchange, and voting data from Hamburg. It is being examined how social networks,  economic shocks, and narratives helped to propel a fringe party that polled less than 3 percent to absolute power. In particular, research is being surveyed that emphasizes interactions with deep-rooted, pre-existing beliefs as a key determinant of how the Nazi virus spread.
