New Developments in the Theory of International Environmental Agreements

Workshop

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the University of Bath are jointly organising the workshop on “New Developments in the Theory of International Environmental Agreements” on March 27-28, 2014, in Mannheim, Germany.

Given the need and the current difficulties of negotiating a Post-Kyoto Protocol for the period after 2012, the problem of overcoming strong free-rider incentives in international climate politics is still pressing and has become even more important over time. From an academic perspective, it is important to model international negotiations leading to an international environmental agreement, including the design of appropriate enforcement mechanisms for participation and compliance as realistic as possible, capturing important features of the underlying economic problem as well as political and institutional features. This requires a break-through of new conceptual ideas with a deep understanding of real-world problems.

This workshop aims to bring together world-leading academics working in the field of international environmental treaty negotiations and covers different conceptual approaches such as game theory, with a theoretical and empirical focus, behavioural economics including experimental economics, and quantitative political sciences.
