Sven Heim studied economics at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. He specialised in industrial economics and econometrics. His diploma thesis in cooperation with the German Federal Network Agency, the Bundesnetzagentur, empirically analysed auction design and bidding strategies in the German market for electricity operating reserve. In January 2012, he joined ZEW's Research Group "Regulation and Competition". He oversees the research focus "Competitive Strategy and Competition Policy" and manages several research and third-party funded projects, for instance, carried out on behalf of the European Commission, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy or the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. In addition, he was a lecturer in microeconomics at the Cooperative State University Mannheim from 2012 to 2014. He was a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2013. In 2016, he completed his dissertation entitled "Six Empirical Essays on Competition and Regulation in Energy Markets", in which he investigated different issues on functioning, competition, and regulation in electricity wholesale and retail markets in the context of changing market structures. He received several research awards for his works on competition and strategic behaviour in electricity markets. His further research interests include the economics of information, effects of mergers and acquisitions, cartels as well as the impact of state aid.
