Jörg Ohnemus studied economics at the University of Mannheim and the University of Heidelberg, specialising in currency and monetary policy, development economics, and econometrics. Following his studies, he joined ZEW’s Research Department "Digital Economy" in 2004. He obtained a doctoral degree from the Humboldt University in Berlin. His thesis was entitled "Empirical Analysis of Information Technology and Business Process Outsourcing" and analysed the impacts of IT outsourcing on productivity and employment.

The diffusion of information and communication technologies on firm and industry level in Germany as well as internationally is at the heart of his research. He analyses innovative ICT concepts and applications such as mobile internet, social media, cloud computing, big data, and industry 4.0. These topics are particularly interesting in terms of their effects on productivity. Furthermore, Mr. Ohnemus’ responsibilities include the supervision and elaboration of the ZEW economic survey in the information economy.
