[ D] The Mannheim Enterprise Panel (MUP) is a panel data set of firms located in Germany. It is maintained at ZEW in cooperation with Creditreform, the largest business information service in Germany. Creditreform provides its firm data in six month intervals for ZEW, where the data is prepared and reconstructed to maintain the MUP. The MUP enables the analysis of, for example, market entrances and exits (start-ups and shut-downs), changes in numbers of economically active firms in specific sectors and regions, the development of firms over time or the dynamics of job creation in firms.
The MUP is an important source for statistics on firm foundation in Germany. Current developments in the field of firm formation are annually evaluated on the basis of the data, edited professionally and published every six months in the ZEW-Gründungsreport. The evaluation of the business formation is conducted on the regional aggregation levels administrative districts and independent cities, spatial planning regions and federal states. Aggregated numbers on development of firm formation activity in Germany can be acquired by ZEW. Apart from regional analyses, micro-level analyses are conducted regularly on the basis of the panel, too. Besides, the MUP contains almost entirely data on insolvencies in Germany. With its detailed information about insolvencies, specific analyses on characteristics of insolvency proceedings, such as duration or outcome, can be examined. Furthermore, the MUP is – owing to its comprehensive information about the stock of economically active firms in Germany – an important parent population for firm surveys. Until the end of 2008 the part of MUP-data constituting the basis for the foundation statistics were maintained under the name "ZEW-Gründungspanel" (Foundation Panel). In order to avoid confusion and mix-up with the newly established KfW/ ZEW Start-up Panel the name "ZEW Foundation Panel" is not being used as an autonomous designation anymore. The Mannheim Enterprise Panel is thus the new source designation of the foundation statistics at ZEW.
