[ D] Due to the importance of education for human capital, the society and the economy, we conduct research on education in all of our five departments and in the two research groups at the ZEW. Microeconometric methods are developed and applied in order to empirically and theoretically analyse educational processes using representative cross section, longitudinal as well as experimental data.
A substantial part of education research is concentrated in the research area "Economics of Skill Formation", which was founded in 2005 within the department "Labour Markets, Human Resources Management, and Social Security". This establishes the close relationship between education, human capital and the labour market in our research. The main objectives of investing in education are the reduction of unemployment and the increase in labour market participation and productivity. The investments by firms and corporations into human capital are studied in cooperation with the research area "Human Resources Economics".
The role of education and human capital for innovation and research policies in the information age are studied in cooperation with the research department "Industrial Economics and International Management" and the research group "Information and Communication Technologies". The research department "Corporate Taxation and Public Finance" analyses public funding of education. The wealth distribution in Germany and its relation to wage inequality and human capital formation are studied in the department "International Finance and Financial Management". A potential contribution of education to achieving sustainability in environmental policy is addressed in the research department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management". The research group "Growth and Business Cycle Analyses" deals with the macroeconomic aspects of investments into human capital and economic growth.
