The Production of Education
One focus of research at the ZEW is on the production of education, i.e. the level and distribution of educational achievement for the population as well as its determinants. Some aspects of central interest in this field are the extent of social inequalities in educational achievement as well as the impact of education policy.
There are three important aspects when analysing the production of education:
- First, we analyse how effective resources are allocated with respect to the desired educational outcomes.
- Secondly, the equality of educational opportunities is of crucial importance, i.e. analysing the degree and the nature of social inequalities in educational prospects
- Thirdly, some studies are related to the financing of education
and on the effects of educational policy and institutions on educational outcomes.
- We furthermore study less structured education processes during early childhood and within the family to learn more about the relevance of childhood for school and labour market outcomes.
