Education and the Labour Market

Lifelong Learning

The acquisition of skills and knowledge does not stop at the end of initial education. The skills acquired within the education system may be complemented by on-the-job training and formal or less formal training measures. In the context of rapid technological change and increasing international competition, it becomes increasingly important to update one's skills and to acquire new types of skills in order to adapt to the new working environment. The transition from an industrial economy to a knowledge-based society requires the learning process to be continued throughout the entire life-cycle. This is the concept of lifelong learning.

In this context, research at ZEW focuses on the following issues:

  • What determines the propensity of workers to undertake further training and which type of training is completed?
  • Who are the providers of training and how is it funded? Are there some complementarities between education and training?
  • Can training remedy insufficiencies in initial education and improve labour market prospects?
  • Does investment in (different types of) training pay off in terms of earnings?
  • Does it reduce the risk or duration of unemployment?
