Start-ups to Quickly Enter the International Market

Research

At yesterday evening's press conference, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim and the London Business School (LBS) presented the findings of their study on the rapid internationalisation of start-ups in Germany and the UK.

The study was based on a survey among 600 German and British high-tech start-ups. According to the study, more than 60 per cent of high-tech start-ups frequently engage in foreign business activities already during the initial years of operation.

The study analysed in detail the reasons behind the internationalisation as well as its influence on corporate success, and addressed the substantial differences concerning the internationalisation strategies of German and British businesses. Furthermore, the study provides an insight into the problems faced by the high-tech start-ups when trying to enter a foreign market. In this context, the management's attitude towards internationalisation as well as the managers' level of experience in the international market is of central importance. It is important for high-tech start-ups to appoint managers who already have a certain experience in international markets.
