Workshop on "Interaction Within the Family:
Collective Approach and Bargaining Models"

The workshop on "Interaction within the family: collective approach and bargaining models" will be held at the University of Turin, October 28-29, 2005.

The workshop is organised jointly by Olivier Bargain (the Institute for the Study of Labor - IZA, Bonn), Denis Beninger (the Centre for European Economic Research - ZEW, Mannheim), Daniela Del Boca (CHILD, University of Turin) and Gianluca Violante (C.V. STARR Center, New York University).

Intra-family aspects are often neglected in the economic literature, although several studies have shown that intra-household distributional effects should not be ignored when evaluating the welfare effects of social and family policies. However some obstacles remain in the theoretical implementation, and in the empirical application, of models allowing for multi-decision centres within the family. The purpose of the workshop is to bringing together some of the top experts and younger researchers in order to present and discuss the latest theoretical work related to the collective model, cooperative models and non-cooperative models of the household decision process as well as the relative empirical studies. The contributions, theoretical or applied, will concern the following topics:

  • household's labour supply and domestic production
  • fertility decisions
  • intertemporal choices
  • marriage market
  • distributional effects of tax-benefit policies
  • consumption choices
  • equivalence scales and welfare measurement at the individual level
