Economists in the research area “Digital Networks and Knowledge Acquisition” study the use of ICT by individuals for education, work, and private activities. The continuous advancement of technologies for information processing and communication necessitates the on-going adaptation of skills on the part of individual users as well as the adaptation of workplace organisation on the part of firms. At the same time, new technology provides new opportunities for the exchange of information and acquisition of knowledge (for example, through online forums and digital networks). In this connection, economists in this research area study the motivations for and the impacts of activities by Internet users, as well as the dynamics of digital networks.
